rustic modern bedroom makeover. / sfgirlbybay

i recently saw this stunning bedroom makeover on the house that lars built and i just had to ask brittany if i could share with you. it’s the home of Merrilee Liddiard of Mer Mag, a beautiful online space for all things kids, creative and playful — you’ll find an abundance of beautifully executed resources and ideas to play creatively with your kids. for her makeover, Merrilee gave this bedroom a tranquil coat of pale blush paint and added accents of rust, black & white and plenty of texture with natural wood and layered bedding. i’ve been on the hunt for an oversized pendant lamp for my new cottage and this sheer beauty called the koushi lamp is giving me ideas! for the full before and after, visit the house that lars built. thanks for allowing me to share, ladies!

parabo press giant square engineer photo print. / sfgirlbybay

i’ve long been a fan of Parabo Press and recently they saw my holiday in italy and invited me to take my favorite photos from the trip and try out their square engineer prints in a brand new size. their engineer prints are one of their specialties and a customer favorite at Parabo Press — i’ve ordered lots in the past and always loved how they turned out. They’re printed on paper typically used for architectural plans — making the prints giant and extra light, so they’re super easy to hang. a high-quality print for a reasonable price, available in either full color or black & white. and, you can hang them very easily (and inexpensively!) with their 36” wood poster rails, which are magnetic, so a cinch to hang and create a very simple looking frame that leaves the engineer print as the main focus of your eye.

Parabo Press has just launched new square engineer prints, measuring 3×3 feet — a new take on their old 4×3 foot favorite from Parabo’s earlier days. the square engineer prints are $25, and pair well with their 36″ wood poster rails ($50, and available in 3 colors) so you can make a big statement with your best shots printed up on matte, white, lightweight paper. and the magnetic rails make it easy to swap out your art too since they’re just semi-permanent so you can change up your look very affordably as often as you like. i also think they’re a perfect solution for artists wanting to display their work in galleries without spending a ton on framing. so, without further ado, check out the variety of prints i created from my trip to sicily, including their smaller newsprints (i love these!) and their tiny square prints with their skeleton clips and horizontal photo rope (which also comes with eight extra-powerful magnets). i love how these turned out and can’t wait to send a few of these to my travel mates. if you’d like to make some prints of your own, use the coupon code SFBAY for 20% off at Parabo Press good from 8/14 through 9/2! happy creating!

modern pink rug in bohemian modern living room. / sfgirlbybay

rugs are the designer’s dream come true. if you’ve tired of your current decor, simply start by changing out your area rug and build from there — and voila, you’ve got an entirely new look. i’ve partnered with Nordic Knots to show you just what i mean. Nordic Knots carries the most beautiful, high-quality wool rugs and is founded on the scandinavian tradition of functional design with a minimalist aesthetic. they like to make it simple for you to choose a rug because they know it’s the foundation to designing a beautiful room. i chose three of my favorite rugs: Modern in pink, Plus in charcoal/cream and Nomad in cream — styling them up in my living room and office to show you how to easily change up your vibe, literally building from the ground up.

let’s start with Nordic Knots’ Modern rug in pink. this h cut-pile rug is made with 100% new zealand wool for great quality and a soft feel, woven by hand so it feels nice under your feet. i love the early 20th-century swedish design that inspired this collection, and Nordic Knots designed it with the idea that it might become like a piece of art for your floor, giving your room a modern touch in a gorgeous shade of pink with black and white accents. i’ve paired it with my white sectional sofa, and a mix of white, pink, black and gray throw pillows and ottomans. and i’ve accessorized my white scandinavian-inspired saarinen coffee table with color-coordinated ceramics and books to give the room a whole new, cohesive look.

nomad cream rug with tattoo inspired print. / sfgirlbybay

Nordic Knots’ newest design, Nomad in cream is one of my personal favorites, based on Scandinavian tattoo art. Nordic Knots co-founder Liza Laserow’s grandfather sailed the Nordic seas and growing up she found herself curious about the stories behind the tattoos on his weathered sailor’s arms. inspired by her childhood memories and the heritage of Nordic nomadic tattoos Nordic Knots has collaborated with renowned tattoo artist Erik Lööf of Stockholm Classic Tattoo Studio to create h, super chic rug that looks perfect with a black and white themed room (it also comes in the really pretty sand which is a darker shade). to style around this color scheme, i added a stack of black coffee table books, natural and black accessories and changed out the art gallery for a much more graphic look with black & white photographs and vintage art prints. i’ve kept the prints on the pillows to a minimum to allow the tattoo design of the Nomad Rug stand out. the black leather chair and ottoman complete a really sophisticated, but fun look (who doesn’t love a little tattoo art?) and the rug makes the black and white books on my built-in shelving really pop.

love black and white, like i do? then you’re going to love the Plus Rug in charcoal & cream. it’s got a distinctly Scandinavian, classic design with a minimalist aesthetic — a great complement to the rest of your décor. for this look, i added a splash of mustard yellow to compliment the black and white pattern of the rug with a vintage yellow chair and a pop artwork gallery and then added a bright yellow velvet pillow. the accents on the coffee table are placed in a vintage yellow ceramic tray for another pop of color. every time i changed things up around my living room, i liked one look better than the other, but then again kept going back and forth! one space, but so many decor possibilities with these rugs as your base.

now let’s see the Modern Rug in pink in my office — it gives my office an inspiring burst of feminine color and pairs really well with my existing mid-century modern pieces like the case study daybed and magazine rack-coffee table. it’s looking swell with an oversized art print and pillows in pastels and especially stands out beautifully against white-washed hardwood floors, and i love the look of the black steel & glass cabinet paired with the pattern in the Modern Rug.

last look! let’s see how i can completely change the look of my office when i swap out the Modern Rug in pink with the Nomad in cream, shall we? completely different, and i’d venture to say a more neutral or slightly masculine look. i’ve kept the look pretty minimal here, again letting the nomad shine as the statement piece that it is, with minimal black & white art, pillows and natural light wood furnishings. but you can see that the rug makes the exact same furniture look uniquely new, with just a bit of styling and changing out of the artwork and textiles. easy, right?! it’s your turn!

frogtown home tour via take sunset. / sfgirlbyby

as per my previous post, i’m loading up the truck and moving to laguna beach. i’m actually kind of a weirdo about moving — even though i’m definitely a homebody, i really like moving to new places and having the chance to redecorate all over again. the packing part, not so much, but the unpacking and seeing how your treasures fit in a brand new space is really fun for me. in this case, the cottage is smaller, so i need to downsize quite a bit (stay tuned for some online sales and a yard sale soon!) and i also need to replace a few things, like my sofa which is too large, and i’ll need a cool new bookcase since i can’t take my built-in with me. but for me, that’s the fun part — hunting for new pieces to complete my home and make it my very own, uniquely ‘me’ space!

i’ve been inspired by a few places and people — this gorgeous frogtown home, designer leanne ford’s golden touch and especially her little cabin in the big city project, and also serena mitnik-miller and mason st. peter’s incredibly beautiful topanga home. i want to keep the cottage pretty open and minimal and rather ‘wabi-sabi’ with lots of white and neutrals — slipcovered sofa and chairs (like these from elsie green), vintage rattan (i’m keeping my daybed for the guestroom!), sisal rugs and oversized paper lanterns. anyway, here’s a peek at what i’m getting inspired by at the moment. stay tuned for more!
