low maintenance patio life.

now that i’m living at the beach, and on an acre-wide cactus garden, i’ve gotten really into outdoor living. i have succulents, cacti, bamboo and all kinds of palm trees surrounding my little cottage, and not only are they beautiful, but they’re also all such low maintenance plants! they’re all drought-tolerant so they need very little water, and they propagate all on their own, so the more the merrier. i’ve rounded up some low maintenance looks for you — some more than others, although they say once a living wall gets going it never stops! i really love the look of these cactus paddles hanging, too, so i may have to try that as i’m soaking in these last days of warm california weather!

color story: morning latte.

you know that morning moment when you pour the cream into your coffee (whether it be almond, soy, coconut or whatever you put in your coffee these days) and it makes that marbled, beautiful kind of caramel swirl color. yes – that moment. that’s what inspired today’s color story. i just love that color and always feel compelled to document it, but lest you loathe those coffee shots i’ve opted to put the color to better use today and share what the color might look like in decor. here’s to that morning brew and all its beauty.

this week’s worthy account is full of some truly inspirational interiors. we’re viewing author, photographer, and interior stylist @idamagntorn who’s based in both paris and sweden (lucky gal!). ida magntorn has several books out including home stories and her latest is Ett hem med omtanke. i love the rustic, but quite bright and fresh spaces she occupies and brings to her feed — they’re all vintage-inspired and quite lovely as you are about to see. enjoy ida’s work if you’ve yet to see it on and around design circles worldwide.

friday finds.

elegant dining room with gold saarinen dining chairs. / sfgirlbybay

this week’s friday finds feel very fall-ish. we are into mid-october, afterall with halloween and then thanksgiving just around the corner. it’s rather hard to believe this year is flying by so quickly. but here i am, embracing a new color palette, one that’s appropriate to this time of year. i hope you have a chance to cuddle up with a good read this weekend and celebrate the season.

xo, victoria

  1. i just adore this simple but oh so elegant dining room with its magical gold saarinen dining chairs, furry flokati rug and beautiful lighting fixture. the room itself has exquisite natural light as well — all those lovely floor to ceiling windows. sigh.
  2. i don’t know if i’d have ever considered ochre-colored walls, but this bedroom certainly looks dreamy and the deep yellow walls work perfectly with the subtle stripe of pink in the throw. an unexpected but delightful pairing!
  3. these chairs! they’re haunting me. they keep popping up all over the internet and i want one of my very own. i love the curves, the mod look, i simply love everything about them. not only are they fabulous to look at, but they also appear to be quite comfy as well. smashing!
  4. i love this beautifully styled vignette from @jacqui_turk, a Sydney based Interiors and Lifestyle photographer. it’s a favorite of hers, too, from a series of images shot for @houseofstylepodcast — A podcast celebrating Australian designers, artists and personalities. i simply must have a listen.
  5. i’ve become somewhat obsessed with this artist (i believe those are her ceramics above, too). meet emma gale, a painter and clay artist out of australia. i’ve been contemplating inquiring about a commission from her, but i want a huge painting and the shipping alone may put me under. a girl can dream, though. have a gander at her beautiful work.
  6. more ochre. i really like the look of this very laidback living room situation. cosy layered throws and pillows make it the ideal place to read or nap a long lazy afternoon away. it would appear that i am officially slipping into an autumn mood.
  7. i’ve long admired this beautiful nude painting (the whole house for that matter). i do love a good nude, and we found a couple of great vintage nude paintings while in france. i just added them to super marché.
  8. more cool chairs, this time from atelier de troupe — an l.a. shop! these are apparently called coda chairs and they are simply stunning. tubes and turns abound on these beauties. i must make is mission to find one of my very own (and in my price range).

inspiring interior of South Wales eatery, blacksmith provedore. / sfgirlbybay

this week we’re headed down under yet again — the design the aussies put out is just that good. today we’re popping into a swanky New South Wales eatery, blacksmith provedore located at Lake Mulwala, the beloved seaside destination for Australians, designed by The Stella Collective. it’s modern but warm with some stunning tile work and loads of attention to the smallest detail, italian style. think posh for sure, but they’re simply serving up pizzas in style. we’re going to layer it up since evenings could get chilly by the sea — a pretty lace dress worn over sexy black slacks (i love that look) with a faux leather wide-belted jacket just in case, and we’re pairing all that with some smashing mod white boots because frankly, they’ll look great walking around these grounds. it’s a long flight to australia, so i suggest reading the beloved Pulitzer Prize winner (or re-reading, it’s that good) the goldfinch by donna tartt before you see it at the cinema.
